WADA CELEBRATES ‘PLAY TRUE DAY 2021’ WITH ATHLETES AND THE GLOBAL ANTI-DOPING COMMUNITY
Montreal, 9 April 2021 – Today, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) celebrates Play True Day 2021 with athletes, National and Regional Anti-Doping Organizations, Sports Federations, Major Event Organizers and other anti-doping stakeholders from the global anti-doping community. This year, the campaign centers around the question: “What does Play True mean to you?”

Since 2014, in April of every year, WADA and the anti-doping community worldwide have celebrated ‘Play True Day’ -- a day that is dedicated to raising awareness among athletes, the sporting public and others about the importance of protecting Clean Sport.

The inspiration for Play True Day stems from a WADA-hosted Education Conference in 2013, which was attended by 17 Latin American countries. While the celebration started as a small initiative, last year, the Agency’s digital and social media campaign reached more than 50 million people worldwide with numerous individuals and organizations taking part from around the globe.
On the occasion of Play True Day, WADA President Witold Bańka said: “On behalf of WADA, I would like to sincerely thank everyone involved in Play True Day 2021. This year, we asked stakeholders to let us know ‘What does Play True mean to you?’. While the answer is different for everyone, for me, Play True means ‘respect for every human being’, a value that is so central to WADA’s mission. Despite the various challenges we face in anti-doping, I remain optimistic for clean sport. We owe it to the world’s athletes to provide them with the opportunity to gather on a level playing field and to entertain and amaze us with their athletic prowess and sense of fair play. There will continue to be challenges along the way but, on this Play True Day, I am confident that if we work together in a spirit of respect, we will succeed in further strengthening the global anti-doping system for the benefit of all athletes.”
WADA Director General, Olivier Niggli said: “For me, the Play True message centers around athletes respecting themselves, their fellow competitors, and anti-doping rules in order to protect the values of clean sport. These values, which include respect, integrity and inclusion, are of fundamental importance for athletes competing today. They are leading the example for future generations. Therefore, as the global clean sport community, let us unite on Play True Day, and every other day, to work together towards a world where the clean athlete prevails.”
